Answer: by working harder and for less than a slave.
Some slaves were paid wages. This was more often true in Latin America where manumission was more widely practiced. Sometimes whites paid the financial price of the slave being freed. Sometimes black confraternities paid for a particular slave to be freed. And sometimes the black slave saved up their meager wages and eventually purchased their freedom decades later.
Dr. Ben Carson is a brilliant man and an educated man that apparently is a responsible husband. His character traits are those of which other black males in the US would elevate their lives and communities if they adopted those character traits as well.
