I bet that one $4 BILLION dollar warship firing $1million missiles would fund Meals on Wheels.

Priorities, people!

(and actually yea it would, the entire Community Block Grant for the nation is $3 billion,
http://www.ktxs.com/news/politics/me...dget/399269988

really people thats our priorities? Investing in weapons of mass destruction, and shooting off our expensive toys to intimidate the world?
How about ONE less warship to keep our country, our nation, our people healthy and strong?)

My mom has a goal to remain in her condo as long as she can. She is now 87. I live about 10 miles away and stop by weekly to bring by homemade soup and fresh fruit and veggies from our garden plus have some step family also stopping by. My sister is moving back home so she can help, also. My mom can cook now but just heating up soup or making a sandwich are the limit on what she wants to do. And, she was a great cook.

She won't need meals on wheels, but if she did it would keep her fed and someone could keep an eye on her. Our family is able but not everyone's can.
Did she only eat once a day.
You know they make great microwavable meals these days.
My aunt was on her own, health failing and early on set dementia. My sis was fortunate enough to be able to see she was fed and people from the church and community helped. She got so contrary though that she wouldn't eat the stuff that was brought to her, she wouldnt eat microwave meals either. At the end she was living on crackers and M&Ms.

That one meal a day wont save them. As that percentage of federal money funding the program wont destroy them.
Lets not forget the food stamp and various other programs they can receive.

Ludicrous. You back taking away food from the homebound elderly and disabled but have no problem increasing the military budget by $54 billion even though we already spend more than the next 9 countries.

My mom was your typical 50's woman who stayed home and took care of the kids. That was society dictate at the time. Just as women not getting an education was. She started work in her late 40's, and she still gets more than $750.00 a month.

People who make $750 a month qualify for Medicaid (no co-pays), free medication, free doctor visits, EBT (free food), housing assistance, heating assistance, free phone, etc while a middle class turned elderly doesn't qualify for any of this.

A person gets $750 a month is getting half of their spouses SS and/or they were weren't workers while they were able bodied.

1. no-one is taking away food....meals on wheels is 90% funded by donations

2. the military is been short and needs a slight build up...still spending less than we did a decade ago

3. the cut of foreign aid all but pays for the military increase

4. its not 9 countries..its only about 4...and we spend right in line with everyone else (1-4% of gdp)

most countries spend about 1% to 4% of their GDP on the military...as do we
and if you are going to use the raw dollars then we spend more than the other top 4 or 5...not 10 or 9

defense spending as a % of GDP puts us at #27meaning 26 other countries spend MORE than us on their military as a percent of their gdp

we spend LESS now than we did 30 years ago(adjusted for inflation

what is your answer...not having a military???

the 1980 (carters last year) defense budget 240 billion ....
...would be 700 billion in todays' (constant) dollars

bush1's 1990 523 billion dollar(WAR (desert storm)) budget....952 billion in todays dollars

the budget(spending) on medicare is bigger that the defense budget

No one is advocating taking food away from homebound elderly and disabled people. Many dont feel this program should be funded by the federal government. The program also receives state and local funding along with donations and volunteer hours.
Do you think that one meal a day is all the food these people get. What about those homebound elderly disabled that arent on the program?

Does you

The thing people are missing is that its more than a delivered meal a day that elders need to stay in their homes. That is not what prevents them from having to go to a facility. Its the lack of families ability to actually be there to care for their daily needs. They may need help bathing, dressing, maintaining their home, with their meds, etc. Its nice for them to have one of their meals delivered but it wont make or break them as some keep suggesting.
Your mom probably quit her job in her prime earning years, meaning if she had kept working her SS may have increased. But since she quit working, she lost out on not only current income (to save for her elderly years) but possibly higher SS income.

While EBT allows the elderly to reduce their income by subtracting their medical bills, I don't know any program for the elderly allow medical bills to be reduced by medical bills. In fact when government calculates they use gross income, not net.
