The story doesn't elaborate, but people get fired for any number of reasons. I'm sure those who find it odd are seeking some racial/sexual component to the firing so they can be upset.
What I find odd is that there is a White House Usher. I wonder what that cushy political job pays?
It's a large household..the Chief Usher handles domestic affairs, scheduling, meal planning, furnishings, artwork, supervises the household staff.
Don't know about racism or sexism--what I find odd is that the Chief Usher usually is an non-political position immune to the vagaries of politics. They typically serve several administrations..Republican or Democratic, with equal efficiency.
If I had to guess...and I guess I do---I'd speculate that the President's paranoia regarding spies got the better of him.
For those who are deliberately attempting to obscure the position of White House Chief Usher, it's the person who manages the White House staff and handles the budget. If you've watched Downton Abbey, it's pretty much like Mr. Carson's job, except that the Chief Usher in the White House doesn't serve drinks at parties.
And as for why the chief usher was let go, there are suppositions that the Trump family paranoia might have been a factor. After all, this is the clan that claimed that President Obama bugged Donald Trump's penthouse suite. They probably got around to realizing that the Chief Usher took office during the Obama administration and could possibly be a mole working on behalf of the "Shadow Government"...dum, Dum, DUMMMMMM!
When a new football coach is hired it is understood he will bring in his own people.
Why should a political office holder be any different ?
Most White House employees serve for decades, especially those in non-political roles such as the domestic staff in the Residence, the GSA maintenance people, the NPS gardeners, etc.

The chief usher and residence staff are not political positions, and it's highly unusual for someone to leave at the beginning of a new administration.
Stephen Rochon, who was the chief usher from 2007 to 2011, said the Trump transition team asked him to come back "to run the house," but he declined.
"It really doesn't matter who is president, or what party is in office," Rochon said. "The permanent staff averages 25 years -- one staffer was there for 50 years."
Sanders was filling in for Spicer and would only say that she left on good terms. She tried to play it like every new admin chooses their own staff, but we know from history that's not true for these roles.
I don't know what happened, but with everything else going on with this administration, the optics of firing an AA woman are really bad. Wonder if she has an NDA or if she'll talk...
Maybe she started singing "I Get A Kick Out Of You" rather than "Camptown Races" when Trump asked for a song when she delivered his Coke.
(Think "Blazing Saddles")
Maybe there were issues in her providing her services to a President Trump. After all if she was hired by Obama and Trump Derangement Syndrome is all the rage now, she was probably bombarded with requests to provide tantalizing tidbits. With his WH leaking like a sieve who would blame them for letting her go?

That is actually not typical with a new football coach to replace everyone.
Not that I care the 'usher' was fired.
