How many loonies are running around out there? Mental hospitals cannot keep them for long due to funds being cut, so they roam around with guns, usually high on drugs.
And yet Trump panders to the gun lobby and rescinds President Obama's rule blocking gun sales to the mentally ill. Smart thinking.
It is a problem - and it's incredibly complicated and has a long history. Plenty (I'd say > 95%) of people in SF want it fixed - but it's not a simple easy fix. And you can't "force" people into mental hospitals (or force them "out of sight") - this is still the United States of America.
Why don't SF's liberal policies work to fix the problem?
............Switzerland has a heavily armed(per capita) population, yet their violent crime rate is very low. Why? Different culture and mindset, plus they recognize the value of a healthy, happy, well educated, gainfully employed population, where people aren't constantly stressed about losing their job for no reason, or not being able to get physically and mentally healthy, or going broke through an unforseen illness.
Much easier to pull yourself up by your bootstraps, if there actually ARE bootstraps. Makes for a peaceful society, more so than guns in the hands of cowards. America and it's pull yourself up by bootstraps that you can't get isn't working- so let's just arm everyone. How's THAT working for you?

Why don't SF's liberal policies work to fix the problem?
They do (are you familiar with SF politics??).
They don't fix it, though. Considering the complexities of the problem (and the fact that you can't just "get rid of them" without major personal rights violations, or the fact that you can only help people that want help), it's not surprising. Again, it is not an easy issue to "fix"...realistically, it isn't going away anytime soon.
Keep in mind, there is a large difference between homelessness and the "crazy" people that most people associate with SF homeless population. The majority of the former are actually rarely seen and seek out help (usually in the form of shelters, and the like). The latter is a subset of the entire population and is more visible as they generally (for a variety of reasons) refuse or don't want this kind of help.
But, again - the issue literally has nothing to do with this thread. So, let's move on.
