I doubt the Treasury or IRS who gets these payments keeps demographic data on the people making these contributions.
When I first heard about this, the anecdotal stories were it was a mixture of people who were patriotic; felt blessed by the financial success they achieved in this country; as well as people who were atoning for ill gotten or criminal financial gains.
Are you adding up all the taxes and fees that you pay to every government agency? Fed Income, local income, VAT, Gasoline, fee's for telephones (land and cell), Electric, entertainment, etc.
If your already at 35 to 40% with just income tax....

Ok, confused by english. What I call income tax, is composed of income, local, state, etc etc..
My total taxation on income is between 35-40%.
I just checked.. I had a very good year last year, almost doubling my income, and I paid 40% income tax.
Last year was "normal". And I paid 36%.
VAT and gasoline tax, is a consumption tax. So that depends on your consumption.
25% on goods
12.5% on food
0% on books, papers
Then there is I belive $1500 each year to our small town, for garbage collection, snow removal, water,
yes currently in most cases, but I am addressing your contention that if one were to travel a private road drivers would have to stop every X amount of miles to make payment. You wouldn't, technology has addressed that concern. I'm also certain you've been informed of this in a previous thread and here you are again. Disingenuous or lost?

I guess my point is that when someone says your paying 50%+ of your income into taxes, they are referring to all the taxes and fee's you pay. The 40% income tax combined with all the others most likely equals more than 50%.
