I am politically conservative, and a private sector union member.
Before I got my current job I had jobs working for small businesses where I felt underpaid and moved on. Several times when I quit, I was offered a significant raise to stay. I always said forget you, I shouldn't have to quit to get a deserved raise.' I didn't understand how to negotiate, nor do most Americans. That all changed when I got a union job--I got everything I deserved (sometimes more). The difference was that I had professional negotiators and lawyers now working on my behalf.
People often say that their house is there biggest investment. You wouldn't buy a house without a lawyer and other pros working for you. Why do people negotiate the terms of their livelihood entirely on their own?
Public sector unions are an entirely different animal, and as several mentioned, are literally a scam, in particular a kickback scheme, which would be illegal in other contexts. When they negotiate a CBA, they have the union on one side of the table, and the reps of the politicians whom they help elect on the other side. That's not a negotiation--it's a kickback conspiracy. That's why they end up w/ CBA's that make it virtually impossible to fire bad people.
Public sector unionism has ruined both public education and law enforcement in this country.
I'm real curious what union that is....because the four we work with (Teamsters, Operator's, Welder's 798, and Laborer's) do not pay. The contractor pays! For each hour worked so much is sent to the hall's for health and welfare and retirement. So you won't see it on your check, it is a part of your benefit package, and as such isn't taxable as income but the union doesn't pay for it. You earn it. So much then is put into insurance and if you've worked enough hours you're eligible for the insurance. After you are vested you get retirement income, but once you hit 65 you still go on medicare and therefore do not get healthcare for life......
I wish I could tell you, but this is who my husband works for so it's not for me to say. But yes, of course you have to be vested for retirement income. What do you mean the 4 you work for? Are you a union member or an outside contractor.
Republicans hate Unions because they don't want wages to go up. They don't want workers to share in the profits of the company. They want it for themselves. The Republicans really don't want a minimum wage. They want to pay their employees as little as possible and have no rights..this country was built on slave labor and low wages...
Money grubbing, organized racketeers, under a socialist guise of legality.
It's a great idea, but like anything "socialist", it is easily subverted into something evil.
CN
How in God's name are unions socialist? How is the concept of organizing to ensure the best deal for themselves any different from the way shareholders organize a board of directors and discuss how to best ensure their interests?
Crazy right wing propaganda that you buy into at your own expense. Not very smart

"Republicans hate Unions"

Public sector union members face the same struggle as you face. While public sector unions are under attack by some elements in the media, politicians see us as low hanging fruit when they negotiate in bad faith. The fellowship of unionization extends to the public sector. Please don't attack your unionized brothers.
