He talks and acts tough on TV and interviews where he can dictate how it goes yet whenever he has to go somewhere public where he will be a pariah and target of jokes, he avoids. Far from scared and on a security point of view very prudent decision. I am sure the Elitist and the Establishment figures would be less than welcoming.
If it was no the Hate speech the Left is promoting and the pure violent nature such groups Mr. Trump just may of attended this event.
Since it is an annual honor given to those in the performing arts for their lifetime of contributions to American culture, and since Trump has contributed zero, and since the focus is on people other than Trump and since he would be so disappointed no one was clapping a cheering for him ... he would just be bored anyway.

He is on record as refusing to attend the usual White House reception for honorees as this year's occupant of the white house is little more than a nazi himself. The other honorees are black or brown and not part of any humanity that Trump cares about.

Ironically, PT-109 was built in Bayonne, NJ and outfitted at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, a place of great honor, right under the nose of the morally bankrupt, racial profiling, rent-gouging, bankruptcy king of Manhattan who is disgracing our nation beyond the wildest dreams of our enemies.

He is not a man of the people (contrary to what some people think) and he knows he has nothing to gain by being seen in public at such an affair. He has become a buzz kill.
So he is conceding the field and minimizing his exposure. He is not able to court any goodwill, might as well skip it and stay in his bunker.
He's not the president of all the people....he only want to be with his 38%. White supremacists, KKK, alt-right, alt-white...all OK with trump. The Kennedy Center, artists, dancers, singers, writers? He runs away like the frightened little girl he is.
I am fine with him skipping. Let them have their night. It is a back slapping affair to be seen attending anyway.
