Difference is sugar, like alcohol is safe and even beneficial in moderation. Anything can be abused.

Cigarettes, when smoked, offer virtually no benefit and are rarely used in moderation. Moderation does exist with tobacco smoking, but it generally comes in the form of pipe smoking and cigar smoking, both of which don't have quite the negative stigma that cigarettes do.

Americans don't do moderation.......... 4000 plus calorie a day high salt and sugar and fat diet will kill you slowly . May take 80 years but the last twenty will be filled with pills and heartache.

Sugar is a natural component of many fruits that are also rich in beneficial vitamins, fiber and other nutrients. Tobacco isn't a component of anything that is healthful for humans to consume. Except for those with special medical situations, a blanket avoidance of any form of sugar makes no sense. Certainly, many would benefit greatly from reducing their refined sugar and HFCS intake, but small quantities of those items can fit into a generally healthy lifestyle for most people.

i agree with you when consumption is excessive. however in moderation, sugar is not an issue. there is sugar in a lot of things, like oranges, corn, and many other fruits and vegetables.

the body doesnt care where the sugar comes from, it only knows how much is there, and does what it can to reduce the amount of sugar in the body.

one more thing, the body makes its own sugar, to counterbalance excessive insulin production. and dont forget that sugar is necessary for the cells in the body for energy.

so again like just about anything else, sugar is good for you, until you use way too much, then its bad for you.

The problem is that just about everything has sugar in it. I have tried to cut down on my sugar intake and have started reading labels. It is hard to get away from it. Even these so called healthy foods have enormous amounts of sugar in them.
Consumption is excessive because all these small amounts in foods that we eat adds up to a whole lot!!
I'm not talking about fruits. I'm talking about the products that have sugar added.
One of the worst things is that cancer feeds on sugar.

Before 1970 obesity and diabetes were minimal and there was plenty of sugar in soft drinks, ice cream, sweets, etc. The sugar was cane sugar. Around 1970 the food industry began using HFCS as a sweetener. Then the market was flooded with "diet" drinks. The problem is not the sugar but in manmade poison.
The food industry began adding substances to various processed foods to cause a kind of addiction. Remember, "bet you just can't eat one"?
The reality is that the food industry is responsible for the huge number of people who are obese and diabetic. They are also responsible for the diabetic loss of limb and blindness. The easy way out for the food corporation is to blame the consumer.
All sugars can be harmful in excess. The industry is interested in profit and could care less if you are sick or dying from their products. Fast food is the same thing. That is, products made from non cane sugar and spiked with unnecessary ingredients to induce addiction. In most cases obesity today is not the fault of the consumer, (victim), but instead the result of corporate greed.

The idea that sugar causes cancer is nonsense. I am talking about cane sugar that has not be altered genetically or saturated with chemicals like glyphosate.

Prior to 1970 cancer was not common. Keep in mind that prior to 1970 there were a large number of cigarette smokers. There is no doubt that smoking did caused cancer, lung disease, heart disease, etc. Sugar did not cause cancer.

If there is any relation ship between cancer and sugar today you need to look at any genetic modification or the use of glyphostae, (Roundup).

Glyphosate is a known carcinogens.

We are a scavenger species, I'm sure when the caveman came across a blueberry bush, he ate that before climbing into an apple tree for something to eat. Then, the low hanging apples were a lot easier to get than running down an animal for meat, but when there wasn't anything else, then he had to figure out how to catch and kill game. No different today, highly processed foods are cheap and abundant, they are the low hanging fruit of our times, it satisfies our survival instinct. Unfortunately, processed foods are infinitely more profitable than fresh foods, and the food industry knows how to manipulate our basal instinct to make that food appealing and or addicting, in the name of profit. We live in a time of global capitalism, money drives all we do, is it realistic we can stop all man made risks? I don't think so, but that's just my humble pessimistic assessment. In the end it may be a self correcting problem, evolution may select the survivors who can adapt to the changing food sources.
