I don't think 1 major hurricane is going to shift "most" to the NE just because of the hurricane risk in Florida. Families and job opportunities will be more likely to cause them to relocate to a specific area.

Keep in mind, people in PR have been through many tropical storms and many hurricanes. It's a way of life for them, much like ice storms and blizzards in some areas.

Yeaa hurricanes are normal there. But keep in mind, Puerto Rico hasnt been hit with a catergory 4 (or higher) in nearly 100 years, Maria was a catergory 5, so it may have scared ppl not used to a hurricane that powerful. Also the Northeast has a larger PR population, so why wouldnt migration be shifted back towards that direction, if worse come to worse.

So are Blacks and Mexicans, yet they vote overwhelming Democratic.

Probably because Republicans insult them.

Trump saying that Puerto Ricans want everything for them will drive many Puerto Ricans to the Democratic party, not all, but many, you will always have Hispanic Uncle Toms

More Puerto Rican gang members will fight MS-13 and Mexican gang members. At least the PRs are in the country legally so maybe they can 'deport' the illegals.

Interesting tidbit I found:
People from Puerto Rico can vote in presidential elections if they move to a state.
People from states can’t vote in a presidential election if they move to Puerto Rico.

There will be plenty of jobs in construction so no excuse for PRs to move to the US looking for work. Unless contractors want to ship in illegals from Mexico and Central America.

well... it's hard to vote for a president in puerto rico when they don't have one...

they have governor like any other state, and only the residents can vote for them

you could try to vote for the governor of ohio but unless you domicile in ohio you won't get far

NY is Democratic already, the change will come when there is an influx in Florida and other southern states.

Those who can flee will be PR's wealthiest, with fiscally conservative values which align well with mainland GOP.

The poverty stricken will be stuck on the destroyed island.

It costs a ton to move from PR to the mainland.

In fact Pa has the second fastest growing PR population after Florida, and may grow even faster than Florida due to the catergory 5 hurricane may shift most PR migration back to the Northeast. In particular Philadelphia, Allentown, Reading, Lancaster, York, & Harrisburg, and maybe even Pittsburgh.
I would also look at the state of Georgia. Florida is just south of Georgia. Puerto Ricans from other states as well as Puerto Rico are moving there. Most of moving to the Atlanta area. Atlanta has a lower cost of living in comparison to metropolitan areas its size.

Default Did Trump just lose Florida in the next Presidential election?

<<In the wake of Hurricane Maria, a vast internal migration of U.S. citizens is likely in the months ahead, as tens of thousands of Puerto Ricans, possibly 1 million or more over time, choose to move to the U.S. mainland....

They are likely to choose warm-weather localities that are familiar, hospitable and welcoming, such as Texas and Florida, currently confronting their own natural-disaster recovery. About 1 million Puerto Ricans already live in the Sunshine State, and Puerto Ricans are projected to soon pass Cubans as the largest group of Latinos in the state.>>

Puerto Ricans likely will not forget this Trump tweet, especially if an inadequate federal response results in a death toll similar or much worse than that visited on New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina.

If Puerto Ricans living in Florida register and vote in mass against Trump, it could have dire consequences for his re-election chances.

And Trump has launched one of his misogynist attacks on the mayor of San Juan, one of the most prominent Puerto Rican politicians, labeling her a "nasty woman."
