Basically, many of those wishing ill will have mental health issues or just filled with hate and anger, probably towards family/friends/self and taking it out on others. Politics makes a handy distraction from the reality of their lives.

I have noticed that here at C-D, I just figure they are mentally disturbed, maybe posting from a "facility" of some sort.

The hate and/or anger coming from the extreme right and left is disturbing.
