#1.... Free Trade is what exists between, say, New Mexico and Arizona. NAFTA, with its 1700 pages of rules and regulations, has nothing to do with free trade.
#2...No: ....we must ensure adequate legal authority to establish control over immigration: to enable us, when sudden influxes of foreigners occur, to decide to whom we grant the status of refugee or asylee; to improve our border control; to expedite (consistent with fair procedures and our Constitution) return of those coming here illegally......... Ronald Reagan: Statement on United States Immigration and Refugee Policy
#3... His amnesty program was sold as a way to halt illegal immigration. It didn't work. Building a wall might do the trick, though.
Turing a blind eye to illegal immigration has not worked. The only reason Democrats fight it is because they are afraid Republicans might actually succeed.
Reagan was a great president then. This is now.

Actions matter more than words. Words are cheap.
Reagan supported NAFTA, trade with Mexico. Reagan also legalized millions of illegal immigrants, spin it any way you want, doesn't change the facts
He fought off the hippies as governor, brought in the national guard to deal with their protests. He called the Soviet Union with their nukes the Evil Empire and made jokes about them. He was quite aggressive, and like Trump said harsh things about the enemy at the time, this would not fly with current rinos.
I think he would regret the amnesty, and thought they would become republicans and it would stop there.
It was the Reagan administration that launched the Uruguay Round of multilateral trade negotiations in 1986 that lowered global tariffs and created the World Trade Organization. It was his administration that won approval of the U.S.-Canada Free Trade Agreement in 1988. That agreement soon expanded to include Mexico in what became the North American Free Trade Agreement, realizing a vision that Reagan first articulated in the 1980 campaign. It was Reagan who vetoed protectionist textile quota bills in 1985 and 1988.
Such a stance today would be considered traitorous globalism by many of the Trump fans of today.
RR raised taxes on SS system, in an effort to keep it solvent. His massive tax cuts at the beginning of his term brands him a clear conservative. Remember he was clearly Pro- life when it came to abortion. He was also very pro-defense, with a massive military build up, and increase in nuclear weapons...
Many of the republicans being today accused of being a RINO also hold some other conservative positions such as being pro-life, favoring tax cuts, etc. That does not stop them from being accused of being a RINO.

It was experimental. The economy under Reagan was crazy good for a while, and no one wanted to think it would end. If you were a kid then it looked very optimistic for your future and the 80s were a great time. It's hard to look back and say it was a bad thing, especially after the depressing Carter years.
I think a lot of Trump supporters do respect Reagan, and they believe he would have recognized his errors if he saw the results in the modern era of too much free trade, immigration, easy credit, etc.

They respect him for the same reason they respect Trump, he was a celebrity.
As the article notes, Reagan spoke of a NAFTA-style free trade agreement during the 1980 election, before the economy was "crazy good."

Hundreds of thousands of undocumented people have entered the country since then
Who is hiring them? Republicans have already succeeded.
The establishment Republicans want cheap labor badly enough to violate the law. The liberals think we can save the world.
Their coalition is still strong. A wall will not stop illegals when they can get a job. Fines will not stop employers. Mandatory jail time will do the trick.
- He was in favor of free trade. In fact, NAFTA was, to a large extent, his brain child.
- He was in favor of large-scale immigration, particularly from Mexico and Latin America.
- He granted an amnesty to illegal immigrants
It's tough to say how he would fall on some other issues of today, but probably those issues listed above by themselves would make him be considered a RINO in the eyes of many Trump fans.
No,not really.
We haven't had free trade for at least 100 years. Nobody except Libertarians supports free trade.
And almost everybody supports immigration.
And lots of REPs support amnesty for illegals.
So, post fail but try again.
