House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) on Wednesday said House Republicans will aim to cut spending on Medicare, Medicaid and welfare programs next year as a way to trim the federal deficit.
“We’re going to have to get back next year at entitlement reform, which is how you tackle the debt and the deficit,” Ryan said during an interview on Ross Kaminsky's talk radio show.
Health-care entitlements such as Medicare and Medicaid “are the big drivers of debt,” Ryan said, “so we spend more time on the health care entitlements, because that's really where the problem lies, fiscally speaking."
Ryan said he’s been speaking privately with President Trump, who is beginning to warm to the idea of slowing the spending growth in entitlements.
But billionaires and investment banks needed tax cuts, right?
Why don't we cut our Defense budget which is almost a Trillion dollars?
We have 10,000 Nuclear weapons ( yet somehow we are scared of North Korea with one "potential" bomb)
Medicare is something workers pay into so how is this a entitlement?
If Ryan wants to talk about "reform" Can he start with cutting off the members of Congress from their tax payor funded "free healthcare" and "pensions" too first?
What histrionics? The thread is laced with comments on how future generations will be affected. Namely, the one directly above yours.
Further, why are we not supposed to care about the future generations? Your comment reeks of "I got mine."
Most of the posters on this thread are not beneficiaries of either SS or Medicare at this time. Those who are KNOW they will be affected the least - although draconian cuts to Medicare will certainly result in a loss of providers. This has been the case in certain areas of the country for a while now. As it is, Medicare reimbursements are too low, some docs won't take Medicare patients. Further cuts or refusal to raise Medicare reimbursements will only exacerbate the problem.
As stated above, voucherizing Medicare (Paul Ryan's wet dream) will result in very large numbers of retirees with no health insurance at all. The working class is getting poorer - wages haven't risen in 30 years. If SS benefits are lowered and Medicare is more expensive/unaffordable, poverty for future elderly is the obvious result.
Isn't this the conservative mindset? I've known it for the longest time.
The military isn't bankrupting the country, heath care and retirement spending is. Military is 15% of the federal budget, health care is 31%, and social security is 24%. So it's the latter two that need to be cut drastically.
Not really. What he may undo can be undone by the next batch, and that batch will have few Repubs among them once people realize that they have been scr*wed.
Cut taxes for the rich to create a deficit, then use the deficit to justify cuts to social programs. This should surprise no one who is familiar with the current group of creatures that have co-opted the mantle of the party that used to be about fiscal prudence and family values.
This tax cut bill will never see the light of day. The would-be thieves of our meager retirement benefits will fight among themselves and fail miserably to get anything together, just like all the legislation they have botched earlier this year.

Everyone is jumping on the word cuts and assuming that they'll pay more out of pocket. The cuts may very well be with caps being set for certain procedures and drugs - not necessarily a cut of services or financial support. They may look more in depth on fraud within both systems which is rampant. You have drs every year just in my area arrested for overbilling. So maybe more audits for the drs who's billing seems questionable.
This is why nothing ever gets accomplished because you jump on the band wagon without knowing all the facts. People then pressure their legislators who won't even listen to the intended revisions or plans because they know they'll lose votes if they decide to side with a reasonable change - just because uninformed people have already made up their minds that this is bad.
There's too much fear mongering on this forum - those of us against the ACA - really were right - but many times the situations do not turn out how they've been presented here.
Republicans have HATED social security and Medicare since their inception so, it is no surprise that with majority power in both Houses and the President, this is the time. Of course it does NOT make much sense to be admitting it NOW, with midterms coming up. Most Americans, even if they have saved for decades for retirement, believe in Social Security and Medicare. Medicare DOES need reform due to wasteless spending but, voters will not allow these programs to be cut. Hopefully that Ryan weasel will ensure his own job loss. He has all the integrity of an outhouse rat.
So Ryan and the other Republicans are lying when they openly admit they want to cut medicare and SS, and write those plans into bills and budgets?
Mr. Ryan, & the other GOP & libertarians, et al are very fond of claiming 'government doesn't work'.
Then when they get elected, they proceed very quickly to backing up their claims.
