Were there campaigns to end bullying? Were kids told to just deal with it and "man up?" I'm asking in light the whole Keaton controversy, but that's another topic.

Most likely, it was taken care of in the schoolyard, without hand-wringing teachers following the kids around to keep them "safe."

bullies find kids that won't fight back. if they know you'll fight back, they'll leave you alone

A lot of us stuck up for those that couldn't. Or should I say wouldn't.

Default Boomers, what were expected of victims of bullying when you were in school?

When I was a kid Bullying was more like intimidation, pushing, shoving and such, someone called you a name you just called them a name back, sometimes it lead to a fight. I was always told to stand up for myself, it worked for me. I'm not sure whats going on with children now but they seem weaker and i don't see how that can be good because it doesn't change as you get older you still have to cope with power hungry co-workers and such.

The "zero tolerance" liberal policies in schools now punish the victim more than the perp if they fight back. Usually because the victim actually wants to graduate.

There was nothing. If a kid was bullied, it was all up to him as to what to do.

Growing up in the late 50s- I graduated in 1962- there was a notorious bully in my class who bullied everyone and got away with it. He was always a big kid, and got to be a good fighter. By high school, he was pretty much an isolated outcast, so the bullying tapered off with our class, but he would go up and down the valley to pick fights in other towns.

He joined the Air Force after graduation, and finally met his match there. A guy half his size really busted him up and put him in the hospital, according to the rumors, but once he came back, he never bullied anyone again. He's still a jerk, though.
