Flyn painted himself as a liar when he lied. Flynn lied to Pence, Flynn lied to the FBI for seemingly no reason. I thought Generals were steely eyed, steady and cool under fire. Flynn folded like a cheap suit.
He lied for his boss, who wanted loyalty but doesn't return any.

There is a lot to examine, and they are being thorough, as professionals are expected to be. We wouldn't want a shoddy job done here.
As far as investigations of this type are concerned, the timeline could stretch into several years. Trump might even be out of office before it is concluded.
