I can't remember ever not liking mustard, but I wasn't a picky eater as a kid. My kids grew up eating mustard on sandwiches. They never complained about it or refused to eat it.
The Hungarian in me says mustard is a necessity to enjoy some good Hungarian sausage - hard to imagine without mustard. And by mustard I don't mean that runny canary colored stuff either.
This question is just one out of vague curiosity, as I have heard and in some cases have observed that the condiment mustard is seemingly in decline or at the very least, is mostly enjoyed by the middle aged or older population, so I thought I would start a thread on this topic and while I’m at it, include a poll where other cd members can vote, also, please feel free to give a brief explanation as to why and which vote you selected
Why do I even bother to respond to these one/multi post wonder post?
As a kid, I thought a well-dressed dog or hamburger should have mustard, ketchup and sweet relish, though today, that dog is good with just mustard.
But my kid, oh no, he wouldn't touch a condiment of any kind with a 10-foot pole. No ketchup on fries either.
If we went to McDonald's, his hamburger had to be ordered plain: Meat and a bun. I recall one time they screwed up and put mustard on his burger ... it had to go back. I drove away before he could inspect the replacement but when he did, he detected that the bun had been replaced but the mustard had been scraped off the burger. O!M!G! The world was ending. He's a somewhat more adventurous eater as an adult – but not much. I don't think he'll be much help to the mustard industry.
When I was in junior high, I don't know how it was that I ever tried this stuff in the first place because it looked so gross – but I discovered that a piece of toast with braunschweiger slathered on it and a healthy squirt of French's yellow mustard was a mighty fine breakfast. I don't think I've been near a tube of braunschweiger now in 50 years but I may need to give it another go.
For Christmas, I got one of those sausage and cheese gift boxes and it had a tiny jar of cranberry mustard that is quite tasty.
I liked the taste of mustard in my teens, and still do (especially hot Chinese mustard)... but, being a veggie, I don't find many things to put it on. Ditto for horseradish sauce.
