A new era in batteries? Just because some liberal CA politician say it, doesn't mean it's going to happen. They're going to need millions of toxic batteries to handle the load that will need to be replaced every few years, hardly great for the environment.
Batteries aren't toxic or we would all be dead long ago.
It sounds good but if it ever happens it will be a long, long time from now, there is nothing that can store that much power at this time and as someone else said how will you charge these banks? Natural gas plants will be here for a long time ahead.

really? when was the last time your gas tank overheated and burst into flames?
lol. I've seen it happen when a vehicle caught fire. Thats ALSO when it might happen with a battery. But actual batteries catching fire is INSANELY uncommon. Know why most folks are even aware it is a issue? Because poorly designed batteries have done so.
Fun fact-I used to own a Ford Pinto, a vehicle that was legendary for also having the fuel tank catch on fire.

See above. Basically its the same for fossil fuels. Except despite everyone having a lithium battery I have actually SEEN more gas fires, and vehicle fires then phones.

No. They do not just spontaneously catch fire for no reason any more then vehicles do. The most common cause is bad design (See ford Pinto for the same-and some vehicles with bad fuel pump designs), or external damage. It doesn't just randomly happen. sheesh.

It would be great if it was the solar/batteries option that was threatening natural gas because it was actually cheaper and more reliable. But apparently that's not the case. It's the new California regulation requiring battery use, not the market responding to a better alternative.

Sometimes those regulations spur the resulting better alternative. I'd prefer seeing DARPA funding for it over this though.
