1. You have just removed a LOT of money from small, medium and large businesses who benefit from this spending.
2. You have added a vast amount of overhead to the system.
For those who think it is so easy, the distribution methods will probably consist of many thousands of people - new Federal employees! Maybe more. Vast amounts of fuel and transportation will be involved...and, of course, you create many points where boondoggles can occur (food going bad, not available in time, too little, too much, trucks break down, employees steal, etc. etc.).
It would seem that anyone interested in a "smaller government" would be against the government having to enlarge itself to create this level of "customer service". Now.....maybe a partnership with Amazon or Wal-Mart....might work out, still - isn't there a MUCH easier way?
Obviously you are also enriching and choosing certain vendors...which is an entire 'nother ball of wax.
My guess is that, if implemented, the savings will come in at well less than projected or none at all. It may end up costing more in the long run. This is the "Trump Way" if you think about it. His medical "plans" are for everything to cost more and fewer people to be covered. His position on the deficit and debt is to enlarge both without shame. His "efficiency" move on the military means to give them unlimited money they never asked for.
I'm all for limiting the amounts and types of products that can be bought with SNAP. This at least is an effort in public health as opposed to attempt to save money....which won't save money at all.
After all, given the Great Trump Economy, won't tens of millions be getting off food stamps in the coming years? With all those extra trillions he is borrowing and spending, he could pay the SNAP people not to look for a job.....
Cool, what about the illegal imigrants that jump the border, do they get the 258$'s a month per person food stamps also. None pay taxes, so if there working for cash and get the 258$'s per person food stamps that's a really good gig they got going isn't it?
I kind of question if the government can do that as efficiently as the free market. Im amazed at all the people who normally think it cannot....suddenly on board with this.
Administration costs for WIC run about 9% (there is some misleading claims of 40% BTW). The food stamp program already has overhead due to its nature, that overhead would NOT be diminished by this change. Money would still be there in food stamps as the food box plan only takes half the food stamps away. Thus...more overhead.
What military on food stamps? The military has the PX. That ol tale keeps getting passed around by people who look only at base pay. They do not count that food and housing are provided during training.
in 2016 67 million in food stamps was spent at military PX's
Forms, you fill out a form with check boxes for food allergies, some programs already do this. Yes, I think they generally do get a substitute product. It's really not that complicated.
Well sure, that could be done. Could it be done for half the retail price though? Because there are costs associated with that kind of customization. Remember, we're talking millions of individual orders that must be processed, packed and delivered. As opposed to electronically transferring funds to a plastic card, and leaving the customization and delivery to the individual. Retail grocery is low-wage, low-commodity-price, low-margin business, I don't see where the 50% savings are coming from.
At least on real food. A lot of packaged, processed food, you probably would be able to save 50% on. But then we're back to taxpayers paying for junk food to feed poor people with.
Wasn't sure, have heard they get medical care, not sure if say an American would in say Mexico thou.
