America just invented a lot of St Patrick's Day, and a lot of it is just based on myth rather than reality, whilst the over commercialisation and gimmicky retail nonsense is just a bit embarrassing.

St. Patrick wasn't Irish but the country adopted him. So St. Patrick's Day is a day anyone who wants to be Irish can be Irish.
