i think a good test of this theory would be "boss baby". since it's lead is one of trump's most vocal critics the movie should have tanked if the theory was true. it was actually the 4th top grossing animated film for 2017 and 16th over all.

( and it sucked. i had to watch it after losing a bet to my daughter ).

I’m sure that doesn’t help .

Fewer tickets were sold at U.S. movie theaters in 2017 than any years since 1992, according to Box Office Mojo.

I don't know OP, I suppose some people might be boycotting the theater in support of our president, but I seriously doubt it's having that much of an effect on sales. Actually, I'm not sure, but I'm going to go with the "every other movie they make is a crappy remake" theory on why ticket sales keep going down. I mean seriously, leave the old movies alone. Most of them are far better than the new ones. I mean look, I get it, movie studios already own the rights to those movies, so it probably comes out a bit cheaper to just remake something old than invest in something new. But seriously Hollywood, I heard recently that there's a remake of Beetlejuice coming. Why?!?! Who could possibly do that movie better than Micheal Keaton!!!

PS. I'm going to the movies in like 2 hours with my family to see "The Quiet Place". But after that, I will resume the boycott.

I hate going to the movie theater. I get the worst headache from the previews. And there is never anything I want to see. Saw one movie in the theater in 2016 with a girlfriend. The last time before that was 2009.

Your information on the movie industry's health is sadly incomplete. Maybe you've been asleep for a while.

See, there are these things called DVDs now. People buy them so they can watch movies at home on their own TV or on their laptops when they're traveling.

Also, there's this thing called cable TV. People who have it watch movies at home.

And lastly, there is this thing called the internet. You can hook your TV up to it, and if you subscribe to the right services, you can watch any movie that was ever made anywhere, right at home. You can also watch movies on your smart phone and on your computer, no TV required.

Yes, theater ticket sales are declining. That's because so many people are watching movies wherever they happen to be.

Drawing conclusions with incomplete information is not only useless, it makes you look silly.

Trump has plenty of followers.

I know that I have rethought my feelings for celebrities that have come out to attack Trump.
I used to admire Robert Deniro for his acting chops and versatility but now not so much.
I used to really enjoy music by Madonna, being a kid of the 80's, but after she stood up and said that she would like to blow up the white house....
I really enjoyed the movie "Passengers" but then Jennifer Lawrence came out against the President and I'm not in any rush to see a movie with her in it.

There are so many actors that showed their true colours during and after the election that I'm making a decision not to support them in their movies.

I think it is fine for everyone to have their opinion and even talk about issues in small groups but when there are millions of people that idolize these celebrities and hang on their every word it is more than persuasive to these people when their favorite star gets up in front of a huge crowd and tells them their opinion. To the weak minded the words from a celebrities mouth are marching orders.

I do think that the negative climate of politics is playing a part in low tickets sales but for the bigger part in this is the so so offerings from Hollywood.

I think they rely too much on special computer effects instead of actual story plots and good acting.

I think they crank up the sound on the previews about 10 times. Don't understand that.

How about the high ticket prices, uncomfortable chairs and paying $20 bucks for a drink and popcorn, then there is always the thrill of trying to see the movie through the sea of cell phones from all the texters, or listening to all the idiots conversations about cute boys, medical issues, bad relationships, or stupid bosses etc.

All that for the privilege of watching a crappy movie that without all the cg special effects wouldn't have any story at all. Mediocre performances from overpaid porn stars whose main talent seems to come from being naked or nearly naked on screen, and they're the same endearing folks that tell me how stupid I am because I think for myself instead of falling into line with the party hyperbole.

Yeah, really makes you want to spend you money to that instead of staying home with a nice 50 inch plasma and an Amazon account. Tough choice.
