California officials are hoping their latest attempt to stem the rising tides of climate change leads to a more socially conscious -- and cooler -- summer.
Officials in Los Angeles have been painting streets white to reduce the effect of urban "heat islands" and combat the effects of climate change.
And you’re from New Jersey. Am I supposed to be indignant about this or are you just another out of state California basher with nothing better to do.
I wonder how many miles of streets are in the Los Angeles basin. It must be many thousands when all added up.
A lot of asphalt heating up, for sure. When the air temp is 100º, new asphalt is around 120º. Once asphalt gets hot, it's slow to cool down, too.
That's a lot of paint, but it will be very interesting to see what happens if it actually happens. The savings in electric power for cooling at night could more than make up for the cost pretty fast if it works.
If they paved the roads with concrete like they did many years ago it would solve the heat problem and they'd also last longer. Bad for union workers who keep patching the same potholes every year.
While most highways are made of a concrete composit this was never true of municipal roads. Asphalt has been used for nearly 100 years.
Reportedly there are 1.6 million miles of unsaved roads in the US. Some cash strapped municipalities have reverted back to unpaved roads because that is all they can afford.
Good idea. You’ll have to wear eye black like baseball players when the sun is out.
