Top Three-Gun competitors can indeed pull the trigger three times a second — for short periods of time. ..most modern semiautos use 30-round magazines, which means the mag would have to be changed six times to reach the magic 180 number. An expert can change a mag on some rifles in about two to three seconds (depending on the gun and how he/she has staged the mags), but that’s still 12–18 seconds of lost shooting time per minute. So a maximum theoretical rate of about 138 rounds per minute... That sort of firing generates tremendous amounts of heat as well"
So, based on above, the rate can be reached if, like the Las Vegas shooter, you have other guns handy and swap out.
So could an amateur get off maybe 75-80 rounds a minute with an AR-15? More, I assume, if he's got a bump stock?

fact..how fast a magazine can feed...has zero to do with haw fast the weapon can fire....
or how about the fact that the military banned Surefire and other like polymer magazines...because of improper feeding and advertising, and not approved by TACOM

it is not really slow
the ar15 is still a bolt action rifle...just semi-automatic
where a highly skilled shooter can only action a level or manual bolt once every 2-3 seconds... with semi-automatic, you talk that manual muscular movement away
an ar15 can do about 60 rounds per minute...that is 1 round per second
the ar15 which is .223 cal - a small round (most are chambered in .223 not 5.56 which is a little higher in power, but still a small size) is not really accurate at any distance unless you have practiced AND zero'd your weapon (eyes to sights)
its popular because its easy to use...easy to clean, work on, plenty of parts available....oh and it looks cool to have a weapon that LOOKS like a military weapon (even though it is not)

"nothing can be done about gun violence in America" despite the FACT that every single other developed nation has addressed the problem, and many of them still have plenty of guns.
You mean Australia and other European countries? Unlike the US, they don't have a population of over 325 million people.
Plus cities like Detroit, Baltimore, Chicago, St Louis, Oakland, are some of the most dangerous cities in the country. They heavily contribute to the gun violence.
