"In light of so many white people getting into trouble for uttering the n-word, what if black people who use the n-word faced consequences too?"

but...but...but....black people can't be racist. They don't have the power to. </sarcasm>

Blacks who use the n-word do suffer consequences from it. So long as black people keep referring to themselves with that word many of them will find it difficult to be anything *other* than that word. They are keeping themselves down when they say it. Similarly women and girls who call themselves b's and h's will often find it difficult to be anything other than b's and h's.

To paraphrase one of Ice Cube's more famous lyrics, you gotta respect yourself before you wreck yourself.

That isn;t the case with the n-word. it s used publicly, in entertainment, etc. And it's considered good if one person uses it and bad if another uses it. It's a double standard. Any other explanation is just semantics.
It definitely is a double standard, and that's OK. Yes, there are different standards for different people because people live different experiences. This is life. There is no one standard for every single person/group.

I'm not sure why people balk at their being double standards.

Having said that, I do agree that it's hard to say the word is off-limits if you put it in your music that's for public consumption.

Now, having said that, I don't get why certain people [who are frowned upon for using the word] have this burning desire to say the word, anyway. The fact is that specific groups re-purpose offensive words all the time. It's OK for members of the group to use the word toward each other. It's a fact of life. Yes, it's a double standard. Get over it.

Self respect is the issue here.

The "N" word is not racist by itself... A person can be racist but what lacks with people is the context of how the word is being used. Thats where the arguments should end . Nobody looks at the context of how the word is being used. Thats the problem.

Like I said, jews won't start calling themselves kikes - no context involved, just a word with a very real meaning and history.

So... I was told a story about a Jewish friend's grandmother referring to black people as "schvartze" as she rubbed a finger on the skin of her other hand. Should that word be banned also?

Who's talking about banning anything?

Did your jewish friend's grandmother, call herself, or her grandchildren, a ****?

I hear that damn word EVERY weekday while on the Los Angeles Metro. It's never white people saying it in public, it's black people. Mostly men, but some women. Frequently. LOUDLY. Often with enthusiasm, anger, or extra "stank."

It's said in front of children, the elderly, and all races.

Non-black people lose their jobs and reputations over the n-word but it is tossed around so much I wonder what would happen if there weren't a double standard.

What if EVERYONE who says the n-word was held accountable?
I hear people, of all races, say that word fairly often. Mine you, this is around the neighborhood high school. I guess I'm becoming an old fart, but I don't get the purpose of two Vietnamese Americans calling each other the N word. Everyone could be held accountable, but why say it to begin with, it's just stupid.
