This is going to be a long process - you don't just throw a man away in the clink for the rest of his life for tax evasion. There will be a long series of appeals and twists.
With good behavior, he'll be out in time for the 2220 Olympics. Unless they find something else at his future trials, that is...
Snark aside, they know what the're doing. If they can't call any witnesses that make the client look better, it's preferable to just rest and argue that the prosecution did a bad job in closing.

Of course, anyone who knows Manafort's dealings is likely to be shady as all out, and it can really crimp the defense's style if their witnesses start taking the Fifth all over the place. Or, in the words of Ken White: "If you're unlucky they get up there, give you some marginal testimony, and then the AUSA gets up and joyrides them all over your case for an hour. Skeevy people do badly on cross."
