The real problem is that the Catholic Church, in doctrine, demands that its clergy be celibate and cannot marry. If they went back to the early days of the church when this was not the practice, much of the child sex abuse done by priests would no longer happen.

Seems like the decision for those in the upper echelon of the Catholic Church to make should be fairly easy then. What is more of a sin? Allowing clergy to marry or continuing down the same path of child molestation, rape, and abuse? Sadly, they will stick to doctrine and continue downplaying the severity of the problem or just straight cover for them.

The church ruined itself by protecting pedophiles, allowing pedophilia to occur by priests, and blaming it on homosexuality by scapegoating that population. This is truly the manifest of hate and evil!

Any organization that deals with large numbers of children where they will be an authority figure tends to attract pedophiles. We saw it in the Boy Scouts and other groups. I think Priests would be of better moral character and more able to deal with prisoners if they were allowed to get married and have children. They live in a world of their own and have no idea of what it is really like to love a woman, have children and run a family. All they have is book learning which is dated in many cases.
Celibacy does not make one a pedophile. However, covering up pedophile behavior enables it.

Gay men are no more as likely as straight men to engage in sexual acts with minors. What’s different is the sex of the minor.

Clergy has never had easy and private access to girls.

No telling the outcomes if they had.
The documentary, "The Keepers" is a real life account of how priests did sexually abuse young girls at an elementary catholic school. The priest simply called into the classroom for the girl of his choice to be sent to his office wherein he locked the door and raped her.

They know the difference and they have abused girls. But if they focus on the girls they'd be called pedophiles and pedophiles are criminals of the most abhorrent kind.

By coming up with the b.s. that these were teenage boys, they can pretend the priests and the boys were homosexuals - implying these were consensual relationships.

Dirty and filthy criminals, all of them.

And referring to another poster - I love how people cherry-pick God's word according to the bible.

In the case of a priest that was at our parish - they were all girls, with the abuse of one of the girls starting when she was 11 and ending when she turned 17.

And the arrogance and whining and foot-stomping this creep engaged in when they clipped his wings with regard to what he could and couldn't do is insane.

In one email exchange written by this guys brother (who was also a Brother in a different religious order) he lambasted the Cardinal for spending time with the victims in an effort to help them heal, adding something like, 'what about those who were accused? Why aren't you spending time with them? Are they not victims, too?'

The gall is mind-blowing.

This is the RCC Watergate, and the RCC will continue down its path to insignificance.

Boston closed 66 parishes due to cost of settling and revenue loss, declining RCC pop, post scandal.

I suspect Pa will see a 3 figure RCC church closure total.

Thousands all over the world.

Thousands fewer places to molest children.

Then how do you explain the same thing going on in protestant churches where there is no demand that clergy be celibate and are allowed to marry?

There is a streak of denial in Protestant churches as wide as the River Jordan. They think it can’t happen in their churches. But it does and with alarming regularity.

From the article---

"Unlike the Catholic Church, the myriad Protestant organizations have no real governing body, which means that a pastor can avoid trouble simply by moving away from the place where the crime occurred. These offenders are harder to spot, harder to accuse, harder to hold accountable. They are seen as respected community leaders and authority figures. To a child, these men are infallible and unquestioned. Which makes it easier for them to molest their victims."

People should not get on their high horse about the Catholic Church, this probably happens more in other churches since there is no way of reporting it and the molesters can just move on to molest again and again.
