Trump, Cohen, Manafort and the rest of the crime syndicate could have gotten away with all of their lifelong **** but they wanted to run for the presidency so that they could steal on a larger scale and might even have some idiot in place to dole out pardons if needed. And then there is the Russkie connection.

A critical difference between the Edwards case and the Trump case is that there were no witnesses in the Edwards case. One was dead and the other was 100+ years old and deemed to unreliable for the witness stand. Cohen and Pecker seem healthy and more than willing to testify that Trump directed Cohen to violate the law.
Plus there are tapes of Trump discussing th payoff. And the timing for Trump shows it was related to the campaign. The affairs were many years prior but the payoffs occurred during the campaign. There was plenty of time prior to the campaign to pay off those women.
Peckers company appeared to be just a front for the Trump campaign assisting in suppressing Trumps girlfriends stories, payments through LLC’s. They probably thought no one would notice.
