Did we renegotiate these deals during the 8 years of Obama?
"Obama said he would unilaterally renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement."
— John McCain on Wednesday, October 15th, 2008 in Hempstead, N.Y
The whole anti-NAFTA talk was straight out of Obama's playbook.
The US has a tariff on EU trucks..... and what does that result in? No EU trucks here. It's called the Chicken Tax. (Germany put tariffs on our chickens after WWII, and we got mad and put tariffs on passenger trucks)
That's how it will work with Canada too. They just won't import US cars. Yay? I mean I'm fine with it, as it doesn't impact me, but I do not think it is a good thing for our people who work in car manufacturing.
Exactly -- unless we think we'll have a direct hit we don't care.
BUT BUT BUT....
here in Charleston SC area Volvo just is opening a huge manufacturing plant (thank you Obama - -lol -- kidding).......There are no Volvo plants in Canada. But Canada isn't going to buy a Volvo if there is a 25% tariff tacked on. So that market is hit. That may impact production quantities, job levels, money spent here in Charleston SC.
Historically trade wars that were significant have not ended well for ANYBODY. Everyone gets hurt....well except for the govt. Consumers,. producers, importers, exporters.
Cracks me up the same people who said the free trade deals ruined the country are now all about them because their dear leader and the right wing media machine whispered it in their ear.
Cracks me up the same people who said the free trade deals ruined the country are now all about them because of their Dear Leader
That's the funniest thing.
As it stands now the US/Mexico deal -- what little details we know is no big game changer for anybody. It's give a little, take a little. Auto manufacturers will adjust their plans accordingly -- raise prices, shift manufacturing, etc.
Trade surplus/deficits meh -- potential for zero change.
Ooops -- it's not a trade deal -- it's a trade understanding.
So do they change the name to UNited States Mexico trade understanding. LOL....
