Earlier this year, the Los Angeles Times ran the following article: Why is liberal California the poverty capital of America?. California's rate of poverty is higher than Mississippi's or West Virginia's. There is no incentive for recipients of welfare in CA to work, according to the article, and 55% of immigrants and 30% of natives are dependent on it. Where do these people live in ultra-expensive CA? Do they shack up 10 to a room? Who are they? Are they established Ashkenazi Jewish families, Chinese entrepreneurial types, or... what?

Apparently the OP has zero knowledge of how “welfare” works ... how little it pays for how short a period of time and how hard it is to qualify for the short term assistance that isn’t enough to live on.

But hey, nothing beats trolling California! Eh?

This is incorrect. Anyone who receives welfare in CA is required to work to continue to receive it, unless they are disabled.

Californians don't care that their policies result in the highest poverty rate in America....they are part of La Resistance and that's all that matters....millions of poor starving children don't matter.

Desirability of the state drives competition to live here ... and that is what prices low income out of housing markets. You know: good old American capitalism? You don’t like capitalism? What are you, some kinda Kommie?

When did this happen? I am from there and knew generations of families who collected it and were not disabled. They were always at home when I stopped by after work.

It's because the weather and scenery is so nice. It's the mecca of wanting to live that old beach bum lifestyle. Just now, that segment is more varied and wider than ever before.

There has already been studies done on this, the population in cities is not static. A poor person comes to CA, works his/her way up the economic ladder, escape poverty, and the vacant spot is filled by another new comer. From the outside, it looks like there is a big poverty population. Look inside and you see many people moving up and down the ladder. Again, it's not static. A lot of people make it out of poverty and the stats don't reflect that because the journalists assume the population is static.

The question is, why do poor people come to CA? The answer is why wouldn't they? If you need to make some money, would you go to a poor red state with poor job prospect or to the richest state in the union with low unemployment?
