I have relatives in Germany living in a fairly small town, less than 10,000 population. For about 50 years after WWII ended they had an unarmed constable and had very few problems. In recent years changes have come and their town has become more violent. They still have unarmed police but they have the backing of a fully armed SWAT Team on call. If you kill one of these unarmed cops in Germany I have serious doubts that you’ll live to see the inside of a courtroom or jail cell because Swat will be coming to put you down.

Do you folks think unarmed police would work in America if the criminals knew there would be a kill squad dispatched if they shoot an unarmed cop?

Nope. We have plenty of citizens who get away with a multitude of heinous crimes and a culture of sympathy for their actions.

unarmed police might work in small town america where everyone knows everyone else, but for the most part police in this country need to be armed.

No, it won't. Police have a 2nd amendment right just as everybody else. So why disarm them? BTW, the reason countries like the UK are able to pull off unarmed cops is mainly because they have the infrastructure to have an armed unit close by. American SWAT teams are expensive.

Yes, all our street police are unarmed. But, they can call for an armed response very quickly if needed. We do have armed police at places like airports, and guarding certain places around the country. Parliament in London for instance, and Downing Street.

Disarming the police in a country where there are more guns than citizens is a really bad idea.

In Germany you have three uniformed branches of the police, you have the Federal Police, the state police and the loca or municpal police. The local muncipal police known as the Stadtpolizei are unarmed and have limited powers, however the other two police forces in Germany have always been armed.

German Local Municipal Police (Stadtpolizei) - Municipal police (Germany) - Wikipedia

German State Police (Landespolizei) - Landespolizei - Wikipedia

German Federal Police (Bundespolizei or BPOL) - Federal Police (Germany) - Wikipedia

Countries where the vast majority of the police are unarmed are Great Britain, Southern Ireland, Norway, Iceland, New Zealand and some small island chains.

There are armed units in the countries mentioned which can be called upon, however this is nothing new, as there have always been a need for armed back up in countries where frontline officers are generally unarmed.

In terms of the US, there are too many firearms for the police to operate effetively and safely without guns, and the US is a very different society to many of the counries mentioned.

Natural Law has always allowed self preservation against every threat to your life. Doesn't matter if it wears a badge, or fur.
