The packages going to high profile political officials and places like CNN get x-rayed and they know what to look for to make that call of "suspicious."

Good point. Not only that, they don't always arrive via marked USPS, UPS, FedEx, etc., vehicles. Sometimes it's a plain white truck/van, and sometimes it's a Penske, Enterprise, etc., rental truck/van. If you're not expecting a package, be suspicious.

BTW, the bombs were real. The Secret Service screens the mail of the former POTUS. If they come across suspicious packages, they alert the Bomb Squad, who then examines and safely detonates the package. It is quite likely they would have caused severe injury or death if former POTUS or First Ladies had opened them themselves.
