Ford needed money during the great recession too. It's just that they had lined up loans just ahead of the crash. By the time GM applied for loans the banking system was locked up and no one was lending.

Hogwash. Most of the money was simply not called loans. US bought a penny stock (GM) for hundreds of times its value-and only recovered around half the phony value.
