Meanwhile you are still much much safer in modern cars than older ones. Eletric are no more dangerous than gasoline cars , which routinely catch fire and people are routinely burned "alive" in them...

This entire story is just sensational that is all. It will likely turn out the dude was sleeping or watching TV just like the last couple of times this happened... It might not, but the odds are that it will.

we are going to see a bunch of these stories and hear a bunch of weak critical thinkers whining as driverless cars take over the US....

Unfortunate, but true. We didn't stop the space program when three astronauts died in a fire on the launchpad in 1967 or when the Challenger exploded in 1986. When you are advancing new technology accidents often happen. The alternative is to stop innovating, and no one wants that.

Obviously, not all defects can be thought of during unit testing. Reminds me of air travel. It's gotten a lot safer in the decades - a lot of things overlooked were fixed. TESLA will be the same way, it's the car of the future but doesn't mean it's a perfect product yet.

There are 287,000 car fires per year in the US causing 480 deaths. How is this any more notable?

He died by driving too fast and losing control of his vehicle. It's a story as old as the automobile itself.

So much for “the party of personal responsibility”......tell me again, how is the driver not directly at fault for his demise?

Gee, one whole anecdotal example after a high-speed crash to launch a clear axe-grinding attack.

Dude died in a corvette a summer or so ago after his battery died and he couldn't figure out the manual door release and died of heat. (New ones don't have handles either.)

We can sit around giving one off examples of people having their fuel tanks punctured and burning to death or a crash trapping the person by their seatbelt....proves nothing.

I really wonder what is political about this?

Won't the IHS tell us whether or not a car is safe?

The best newer cars can avoid a collision up to 25MPH. By themselves. (Tesla, Toyota, Honda, etc.).

At 70 and above? Nope......not possible. If we want to be safer we have to fly or stay home or take a modern train....all are at least 10X as safe.

As long as we decide on "car culture" the carnage will continue. Unabated.
