Huge nothingburger.

The real story is whether workers have the guts to stand up to the ruling donor class or whether corrupt crooks bribed by Wall Street to steamroll the working class will win in 2020 as well.

However, I don't see how someone's identity gives more or less credibility to the message of making something better for oneself. Sure Trump was born to rich parents, but he built himself up into something bigger than his parents.

It seems to me that notion of improving one's economic outlook for oneself by taking control is either a good notion or it isn't. It doesn't matter the identity of who says it. I don't get the whole identity politics that the exact same philosophies are better or worse depending on the identity.

Wouldn't you be offended if I said the notion of bettering your economic situation by taking control had less credibility, because a poor person said it?
Trump built himself to be better known than his father, but his financial track record overall isn't as good as his father's. Both never declared personal bankruptcy, but the President had to steer a number (either 4 or 6, IIRC) of companies that he controlled through bankruptcy. He also got to the point where U.S. banks would no longer lend to him. His father was more conservative and, IIRC, those things didn't happen to him. It has also been pointed out a number of times on CD that if Trump had put his inheritance in a major index fund (probably tracking the NASDAQ, S&P 500, or DJIA...but I didn't click on links in those posts) he would be much wealthier than he is now.

Let's say two men give the same speech to two different audiences that have been selected to be as similar as possible. And let's say the speech is about the importance of fidelity in a marriage. Each audience is entirely aware of the background of each of the two men. One of the men is Mitt Romney, and the other is Donald Trump. Which of those two men is likely going have credibility from the word go with his audience, and which isn't going to have any credibility at all....despite the message/words being identical? The answer is obvious.

Yes the notion of bettering your economic situation by taking control is universally good, but some people would tune Trump out re that merely because they know they can't start where he did. Howard Schultz promoting that same notion 'knocks the legs out from under' a similar 'tune out' because most of the people listening already are coming from better circumstances than Schultz did.

What is it about these Democrat politicans that when they address a Black Audience, they have to pick up an Aunt Jemima accent? Next thing you know, she'll be pulling out a bottle of hot sauce.

To save some time for those who don't understand the reference:

(Barbara Billingsley was one of those circa 1960 television 'perfect moms'. Billingsley was the mom on "Leave It to Beaver.")

Whatever handler failed to put the kibosh on that should be fired yesterday. They're still playing Hillary's 'no ways tahrd' clip how many years later??? I would have known better, and I'm just a gormless CD poster.

President Obama was the ONLY one who could get away with that stuff. He was a genius at ID politics. As Harry Reid said, Obama had "no negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one." Don't try this at home, or at the NAN convention.

if you want black people to come out and vote in 2020, run a black candidate. Otherwise they're staying home.

Ever heard of code switching?

Father Pfleger has served a largely Black congregation for 30+ years and has street cred. Sermons are part theater and he has adapted the usual Catholic mass to the African American religious traditions.

Obviously he's going to talk differently in an interview situation with the media - just like anyone else.
