Article says: "North Miami police officer Jonathan Aledda became the first cop in 30 years to be convicted for an on-duty shooting in Miami-Dade County Monday for shooting an unarmed caregiver with his hands in the air in 2016.
The South Florida jury found Aledda guilty of culpable negligence but found him not guilty of the more serious charge of manslaughter. Had Aledda been convicted of the felony charge, he would have faced up to 66 years in prison."
newsmaven.io/pinacnews/cops-in-cuffs/florida-cop-who-shot-man-with-raised-hands-rejects-plea-deal-headed-to-trial said "A North Miami police officer accused of shooting an autistic man’s caretaker in 2016 refused a plea deal Monday that would have kept him out of prison.
The plea deal would have required Jonathan Aledda to plead guilty to culpable negligence in exchange for one-year probation and loss of his law enforcement certification.
Aledda was acquitted on one misdemeanor negligence charge during his first trial in March. The jury was deadlocked on a second negligence charge and two counts of attempted manslaughter which resulted in a mistrial."
Does/doesn't 2 counts of attempted manslaughter and a second charge of negligence totaling up to 66 years seem a bit excessive? Maybe at least 20 years, sure.
I remember that incident. It's a good thing this cop, at least, is going to suffer some consequences for his actions.
