I'm so sick of this argument being used in defense for people who commit crimes against others. A lot of people have "difficult" upbringings. I had a rough upbringing. Yet, so many of us do not go out and commit crimes. Having a bad childhood is not an excuse for crime. It should never be used as a defense because it's pure nonsense, and no one on any jury should fall for it.

Meh, they have to try something. He's flat-out confessed, he hasn't shown any remorse, there are recordings of him talking trash about the victim's mother just a month ago. "Hard childhood", "think of his age", and "show mercy" seem to be the meat of their argument. It's a distasteful performance, but it's necessary - we don't want this guy to be able to claim he was given incompetent counsel.
