Just to point it out: the article link in the initial post here is from an opinion piece from 11/9/2011.

Not a bad addition to income for someone over 70, retired with no soc sec income limit. You only need 60 college hours to sub. Don't even need an A.D.

I find it interesting that threads like these are usually not started by a teacher complaining about salary.

feel insulted? some people have perfected the art of the persecution complex. teachers certainly have. I provide facts, and you don't like facts and just throw out arbitrary things like "$50k is not a lot of money." in some places, that puts you in the 1%, so your statement is absurd.

Are you proposing paying a la carte for services you don’t use directly? I don’t go to the library and have never had to call the police. Senior services and animal shelters I’m paying for too. There is a lengthy list. Should I not pay taxes for those services?

But there are school districts in wealthy areas that CAN pay better salaries, but choose not to. I live beside a district like that.
It depends on the area and the state's structure for school funding. In Arizona most of the money comes from the state not townships, cities, etc. In New York State (at least Long Island,) the townships pay much more of the share.
