Let me quote from the PA Constitution of 1776 predating the Federalist Papers and the US Constitution.
As amended in 1790:
One has to be intentionally dense (or worse but I'll get a TOS violation for saying it) to think that what applied and was thought of in 1790 or earlier (or even somewhat later) applies today. The weapons in existence then were nothing like we have today. The population was smaller, population density smaller, the country was new and people were paranoid and not trusting of the new government, there was less of a law enforcement presence and our military was nothing like it is now (like guns can even protect us against what our military has if the gov decides to go rogue and we try to fight back, LOL good one).
I have to wonder what our founding fathers would say on the issue if they knew all that has happened since they put their ideas on paper and signed centuries ago, especially what's happened in more recent decades with the surge in these mass shootings. If they knew of the weapon technology we have today and just everything going on in modern times.
At the time the Constitution was written, women couldn't vote and were basically like their husbands' property and most black people in this country were enslaved, yet we hang onto the Second Amendment and things said about it at the time like it's gospel.
Even with carrying most of the victims were shot outside leaving the store with their carts taken by surprise. Many were housewives shopping. Just because it’s Texas doesn’t mean every single customer is carrying and ready to fire at a seconds notice.
These poor people. Another ordinary day turned into a tragedy.

Congress cannot alter the Constitution, they can put an amendment on the table with 2/3 vote. This is how all Amendments started to date but they can also be put on the table with a 2/3 vote by the states. Ratification requires a 3/4 vote of states or 38 of them. The ultimate power of this country lies with the states as intended, if you could get 38 states to agree you could for example abolish Congress, the President and the Supreme Court. That is the power that lies with a 3/4 majority of states with each state getting an equal seat at the table.
Yeah that's what I meant. I didn't get too technical because the point was it isn't up to the president.
Cannot imagine what would have happened if some of them started shooting at each other.
This is my main concern about open carry.....
In the chaos of an active shooter situation, too many people will start equating the sight of a visible weapon as the shooter and start shooting each other.
Too common for people to intentionally misidentify suspects on social media.
Very common to mis-identify. This guy doesn't look much like like the video picture from the Walmart.

The second amendment doesn't mean we should have weapons of war, it just doesn't.
The issue is there is no fundamental difference between what you define as a "weapon of war" and a semi auto hunting rifle other than the hunting rifle being far more deadly. The guns you are referring to as "weapons of war" like the ar-15 are not a particularly deadly weapon. The military version being the m-16 was chosen because it's a light gun, easy to handle and cheap to make. These are important attributes for the general military especially if you are trying to teach people how to handle one. If you are first time shooter this is a really good dun to learn with....
Fox has great coverage now. Lots of eyewitness interviews. Oddly the shooter was captured alive which is rare in these types of incidents.
