These Senators know that their brain dead voting base will turn on them in a minute if they disagree with the Dear Leader. That's how cults work. But some will do the right thing, every now and then. Generally it is those not facing reelection or too old to really care what the base thinks, like Grassley.

You are totally missing the end game. Hate McConnell all you want, but he's a brilliant strategist. This is his endgame:
The house will impeach Trump and sends it to the Senate. Instead of him not taking up the articles of impeachment (he doesn't have to), he will call a trial.
Be ready, Democrats. Trump won't be on trial, but Biden and all the Obama cronies will be. And it will all be played out in public.
