From Google to Papa John’s to Buffalo Wings and Starbucks, more companies are introducing implicit bias training. These HR-sponsored courses are intended to foster diversity and inclusion by making employees more aware of unconsciously believed negative stereotypes. The idea is that if we can combat our underlying biases, we’ll decrease discriminatory behaviors at work and level the playing field for women and underrepresented minorities.
And yet despite the growing adoption of unconscious bias training, there is no convincing scientific evidence that it works. In fact, much of the academic evidence on implicit bias interventions highlights their weakness as a method for boosting diversity and inclusion. Instructions to suppress stereotypes often have the opposite effect, and prejudice reduction programs are much more effective when people are already open-minded, altruistic, and concerned about their prejudices to begin with.
Our brains have evolved for millions of years to detect patterns and segregate other animals into in and out groups. A half day seminar is not going to change that.
Non-true believers probably realized this at the outset. What people need to understand is that this is another educational sham industry. The folks who purvey this crapola make money off of it. Moronic administrators in higher education pay to bring in these shysters to "train" staff and others.
Beyond the fact that our "unconscious" thoughts usually do not lead to behavior and the fact that this "training" does not achieve what it purports to achieve, everyone should be disturbed at the idea of institutional training that attempts to change the way people think. It's consistent with the Orwellian mindset of the folks who peddle this piffle.
Without pointing out stereotypes, diversity "training" would be what we learned in kindergarten and would take 2 seconds: Be nice/civil to each other.
