I'm sorry, but no way should a person who doesn't have $400 in the bank for emergencies buy a 55" flat screen TV, the latest model iPhone, or go on cruises.
Actually, I know of someone -- poor and definitely NOT middle class -- who lived in a rundown mobile home but had a huge flat screen TV covering almost an entire wall. (Yes, this was from a reliable source who had no reason to lie or exaggerate.) Don't know how he got it, but I would strongly suspect that he probably got it on Craigslist and that he got the money for it from drug dealing -- or else he stole the TV. (This person was a true low-life who I would doubt very much if he even had a bank account!) Tattoos, weed, and cigarettes -- yes -- but a cruise or a designer pet ? NOPE.

How did you come up with $400,00 as some kind of magic number?

So, in the "best economy in history of mankind" 40% of people cannot afford a phone and a pair of shoes without going broke........

The contradiction between the boast "best ever economy" and the reality is rather severe.

I have no idea, but it's got to be significantly cheaper than buying them at a gas station.

I see them online for <$1/piece. I believe he charges $3 at the counter. That $2 2x a day adds up!

Here is the current minimum wage per state.

anybody who can't qualify for more than minimum wage needs to be working more than 40 hours/week.
