To me uneducated people are like a workman who's only tool is a hammer. They may be very good at driving a nail, but that doesn't make them a carpenter.
How are we defining “intelligent” and how it that used in the case of this video?
I didn't use the word "intelligent" to describe the man in the video. I said 'uneducated.' He clearly has had no formal education beyond high school, based on his manner of speaking. But he clearly can think logically.
Although, now that I think of it, the kids graduating from college the past fifteen years or so aren't much more intelligent than high school grads twenty years ago. The dumbing down of America.
Intelligence is innate. I would by far rather converse with a smart person than with an "educated" person.
Yes and no. Fluid Intelligence is innate. Crystallized Intelligence is acquired.
Fluid Intelligence is the ability to reason and think flexibly, solve new problems, use logic in new situations, and identify patterns. Crystallized Intelligence is the accumulation of knowledge, facts, and skills that are acquired throughout one's life. Crystallized intelligence is influenced by environment/learning/education, and therefore can be improved. Fluid intelligence is a lot less likely to improve as it's innate, not acquired, and actually tends to decline in old age.
It's the classic nature (Fluid Intelligence) vs. nurture (Crystallized Intelligence) dichotomy.
And, yes, one can have a very high intelligence level in one or the other, not necessarily both, though having a high Fluid Intelligence level frequently elevates one's Crystallized Intelligence level, as well.
the #walkaway twitter link has many good videos from minorities who have learned that the democratic party thinks they too stupid to think for themselves.
Did those minorities then hook up with the party of the Klan?
Having more "common sense" or more knowledge in limited areas doesn't make one "smarter".
I taught history for more than 30 years in inner-city schools and regularly had students who proclaimed themselves to be "smarter" than me because they knew the minutiae of the criminal justice system inside out and I didn't. But they had family members in prison and courts on a constant basis and began doing "family visits" as children.
Meanwhile, none of my relatives have ever been arrested or incarcerated so I've only seen the inside of a holding cell or prison on T.V.
It seems to be a human trait to need to feel as "smart" as the better-educated even when it's far from the truth.
