Does wearing a mask pose any health risks?
No, not for most people. Babies and toddlers should not wear masks because they could suffocate. The same goes for anyone who has trouble removing a mask without help.
Others can wear masks without risking their health, according to experts, despite false rumors to the contrary.
In areas where COVID-19 is spreading, health experts agree that wearing masks or other face coverings in public helps reduce the risk of spreading the virus when people can’t socially distance by staying 6 feet apart.

Not as many health risks as not wearing one poses.

If masks are so effective, then those wearing them are protected from the person not wearing one, and they have protected the person not wearing one as well.

Argue that logic.

I'm saying it seems like it should be a matter of personal preference.

You make an illogical (and false) statement and you want to argue logic?

It's better if everybody wears a mask. Cuts down on the viral load all the way around. Pretty simple really.

Simply calling it illogical doesn't make it so. If it's so simple then why don't you actually address it with logic?

The key passage from the article:

Quote:
The coronavirus mainly spreads through droplets that are emitted when people talk, laugh, sing, cough and sneeze. Masks lower the likelihood of those droplets reaching other people. Even if you don’t have symptoms, you could be carrying the virus and could spread it.
The purpose of the mask is to protect other people from you. The anti-mask people are always claiming that it doesn't protect them. That is not the point.

Masks will probably be mandatory. There are too many people who won't follow safe distancing guidelines and become spreaders. The masks are to protect the others from the spreaders.

only if wearing n95 -- the rest of the mask for the most part- takes both for any protection to work!

I haven’t seen anyone argue that wearing a mask is supposed to prevent one from getting the virus. Masks don’t act as air filtration. Respirators do when properly worn with a good seal around the face.

What masks do is catch the tiny droplets coming out of your mouth and nose (which serve as a catalyst for the virus) when you sneeze and cough so as to prevent them from getting into the open air and potentially into someone else’s system. It takes everyone wearing them to be effective though.

If someone sneezes, another person who is wearing a mask could still potentially inhale that due to air coming in around the edge of said mask. It could also get into your system via the eyes.

If you want to mitigate the chances of getting the virus from non-mask wearers, you would need to go with an actual N95 or P100 respirator (the ones that take cartridges) and properly wear it by checking for a good seal around the face. Eye protection would also be necessary.

Considering that proper respirators are impossible to find right now, I think it’s fair to request that people wear masks.
