Did they not already have a law that said assaulting someone was illegal? Who cares why someone does, it’s not legal ALREADY!
There is a legal distinction between a misdemeanor and a felony. Yes, it was already against the law but now it's a felony, not just class A or Class B misdemeanor.
Do you folks ever read a thread before posting? Post 11 - Sassybluesy looked it up and found it used to be a Class C Misdemeanor.
I'm happy about the change. People are nuts and nobody should be physically assaulted for being asked to put on a damn mask. Grow the hell up already.
Why should that carry a different punishment than other cases of assault? Why should assault on an employee enforcing a mask rule cary a harsher sentence than assault on an employee enforcing a shoe rule?

Because they are enforcing a state policy making the store employee a special deputy of the people.
They're not a "special deputy of the people". They're just a story employee who has no obligation by the state to enforce anything.
It seems the State of Illinois fells differently as they are offering increased protection to store employees trying to enforce the edicts of the government.

Some stores recently stated their employees would no longer tell customers they had to wear masks in order to enter or remain in the stores. As soon as they made that announcement, I posted that I felt they were trying to keep their employees safe by taking them out of the middle.
This presented a problem in Illinois. Our Governor mandated masks some time ago and just this week stated there would be a fine for any business that does not enforce masks in their establishments.
I'm fairly certain companies then complained that this put their employees at risk and the solution was to enact the new law with stiffer penalties, which will hopefully prevent incidents.
The stiffer penalty isn't the norm - classifying assault as a misdemeanor is the norm - so why should all laws change to deal with a problem that is going to be temporary?
