How about assaulting someone in a round of the knockout game? I've not heard that was a felony. Basically if you assault someone in regards to coronavirus, it's a felony. Any other non-coronavirus / mask related scenario it's not?
There has been a problem with retail workers being attacked by customers when the retail worker tells the customer they must wear a mask. Since it has become a problem, and retail workers aren't paid enough to deal with that, they are making it a felony. And it should be a felony. Attacking someone for any reason is wrong, but especially wrong if the retail workers are just enforcing policies that they didn't even create.
It is now a felony in the state of Illinois for any customer (or anyone else) to assault a retail worker who is enforcing the mask rule in their store.
Did they not already have a law that said assaulting someone was illegal? Who cares why someone does, it’s not legal ALREADY!
So now its dependent on the reason for the assault? Oh my.
Ok, I was going to do this step by step, but that is exactly where I was heading. People need to pay very close attention to this nonsense. As if retail workers will now be a protected class....
I swear people don’t look beyond the words, and then ask, 20 years later, “How did we get here?”

I have to say good on this one. It should always be a felony to assault anyone unless they are assaulting you first.

Most legal jurisdictions treat felonies different from misdemeanors. Without the felony designation many local prosecutors would just see mutual combat and dismiss the case. Which in turn means the previous standard did not serve as a good enough deterrent. And since staff at retail establishments have been deputized as public health guards the public through its laws are now giving them more back up.
Do you folks ever read a thread before posting? Post 11 - Sassybluesy looked it up and found it used to be a Class C Misdemeanor.
I'm happy about the change. People are nuts and nobody should be physically assaulted for being asked to put on a damn mask. Grow the hell up already.
