It is now a felony in the state of Illinois for any customer (or anyone else) to assault a retail worker who is enforcing the mask rule in their store.

Good.

And you should be allowed to assault the person back with a crowbar over the head without prosecution.

I have no problem with that.

If you have issues with mask ordinances, find someone else to pick on. Going after the minimum-wage retail worker who can't answer back for fear of losing her job is cowardice of the lowest order.

But if you assault a police officer while "peacefully protesting" you get a slap on the wrist and released three hours later.

What was assault, before? A misdemeanor? You assault anyone, it should be a crime.

Yes, assault from a crime, but like many crimes, there are levels, such as misdemeanor and felony levels.
