At this point it is looking like staying closed is the better solution.

Did you read the post or just the title?

Because it’s a mess. Allowing high schoolers to eat lunch 2 out of 5 days is a terrible idea.

This is not a thread about whether or not schools *should* open. This is partly a ranting thread. My children, for various reasons, are going back in person, one in public middle and one in a private high school.

Dropping my daughter off this morning, teachers were everywhere trying to keep students 3 feet apart. This is like herding cats. It won’t happen. And 3 feet? What happened to 6 feet? Then there was so much insistence on making sure every kid got hand sanitizer that they all crowded up on each other and completely undid all the social distancing the teachers had been trying to do.

PE: yes, and you must wear a mask
Choir, sure, but you’ll wear a mask while you sing.
No water bottles allowed because you have to take your mask off to have a sip of water.

At my son’s high school: football games sure, and the annual rummage sale, sure, but the Homecoming dance is cancelled. That makes no sense at all. Most days kids will not have lunch because masks have to be off to eat. For teenagers! How is this even legal? They are hoping to have lunch twice a week when rotating groups of kids can eat on the football field.

This is not a suitable environment for learning. This is not logical. This is a disaster.

If schools decide to open, just get back to normal. If you can’t do normal, close.

Just MO.
A few things:

1 - You, as the parent, should have the option to request totally online education. Most states have assured that option is available. If you are unhappy with how it’s rolling out, take that option.

2 - The water bottle ban is ridiculous. One, water fountains should be shut down, they are Petrie dishes. Two, pediatricians have already said masks contribute to dehydration so it’s important to frequently drink water. Three dentists have said the masks are contributing to tooth decay because of how they dry out the mouth, therefore when wearing a mask you should be frequently sipping on small amounts of water.

3 - What’s with the lunch? Are they only going half days? Or do you mean they have to eat at their desks in their classrooms instead using tables other time?

Interesting re: tooth decay. Yikes, another thing to worry about.

To answer questions, my middle schooler would do OK with totally online classes. My high schooler would not. He has 3 learning disabilities and needs in person support.

Lunch, the website says on days they can’t eat on the football field, they have to wait and see if lunch could be eaten inside, if conditions deem it safe enough.

Our schools will be closed within 3 weeks of face to face opening. We are heading for another complete shutdown. You can mark this thread for future reference.

You’re likely not alone. I think we’re headed in the same direction.
