I suggest many of you watch some videos on youtube of what's really going on in NYC. Try going to the NYC and Long Island forums on City Data and see how upset people are or join one of the many NYC FB groups - NYC won't be the same for years.
NYC won't recover unless there is a change in the administration. The mayor, and city council are left of Stalin. People seem to overwhelmingly like the job they are doing, so that isn't gonna change. So businesses will continue to leave along with the jobs that come with them. The working poor and those on public assistance will be the only ones left eventually. This wasn't all because of COVID. This was brewing for awhile, but the shutdown really poured salt on the wound. There are just better places to live, and once people leave they don't come back.
It's true that remote working has made companies realize they don't need as many employees in the office. But since it has happened all at once, across many sectors, the shock of it is very hard to absorb. It may have gone eventually in that direction--- but would have happened gradually over time. The economic ecosystem could have adapted.
It has a ripple effect, as well, which is happening all at once. No workers means the restaurants die. You still can't dine inside---but even the takeout is dead. The sudden emptiness of the city has created an eerie vacuum, where criminality and bizarre behavior is filling the void. Again, mainly from the sudden shock of removing all markers of normality at one time.
It more than just those 9 to 5 Manhattan businesses switching their employees to work from home.
Tourism pumps about 50 BILLION into NYC yearly - that's money that keeps theatres, museums, hotels and restaurants and their employees going. Now ... poof! .... gone.
As stated....NYC has been resilient. BUT, they have never faced something called bandwidth before.
Plus, it sure doesn't look like the people in charge of the city are in any hurry to get things rolling again. From where I sit, read and look...not much concern over it either.

Same thing in San Franscisco, white collar professional realize they are likely to never go back to the office. Things have changed, people are looking for 4 to 6 bedroom houses where both spouses can have a dedicated office & room for the kids to play. I live in Forsyth County Georgia & a house by me sold within days of going on the market to a couple from NYC. Met them the other day, they never even toured the house bought it off of photos & a tour by their realtor.
Lol, I love seeing dems try to blame Trump for Covid. I think it's a way for them to make up a story, to forget where we were as a nation economy wise, pre-Covid. (BTW Dow is almost where it was before all this...)
NYC? Yeah, AFAIK they're still housing violent felons and sex offenders in luxury hotels on the Upper West Side.
I WOULD NOT be happy if I plunked down a fortune for RE there last year, lol.
Now it's the South everyone wants to run to....low taxes, minimal government BS, and easy to get a gun.
My house value will skyrocket from all of this, not right away but in the long run. Anyone who lives in a nice suburb in the South that owns a home is in good shape.
