A far more important issue is that a teacher (who is supposed to be fairly intelligent and knowledgeable) thought she had to call the police on a kid who merely displayed an ordinary toy that she knew couldn't possibly hurt anyone.

There's an increasing trend in this country for people to tell other things they know aren't true but try to persuade them they are true. And to do things they know are unjustified but try to pretend they are justified anyway.

And some of those addlebrained people are in positions of trust (teachers, newscasters, elected officials etc.), and are using their positions to spread their hate and lies.
