No joke about Jimmy Carter, he is hands down the best ex. And the longest running one, I assume.
I can only judge by what I’ve seen in my lifetime, and out of those, I think both Clinton and GWB did excellent as ex-presidents. Obama is too early to tell. But assuming Clinton, GWB, and Carter can make Biden’s inauguration, he’ll have 3 of the best ex presidents ever there.
In the past, I thought that a good former President simply left office and shut his mouth and let the current President do his job... Not too sure anymore since Obama, a very decent man, couldn’t help himself and opened his mouth way too much and blocked Trump at every chance he got.
Since Obama changed the rules, “I” hope that Trump becomes the biggest pain in the @zz during Biden short stay as POTUS and then redirects towards Harris once she takes over.... Maybe afterwards, former presidents will shut the heck up once they leave office after experiencing four years of Trump on the attack AND rallying all his supporters not to support the current President or any of their ideals.
I don’t think that the Democrats realized that what they did to Trump opened the door for the same type of activities and attacks from the other side. Yes, the Democrats had the MSM and Big Tech on their side, to control the messaging, but half the country do not have any faith in them being fair, so they’re only preaching to their current crowd... Just like Trump, with his supporters.
The sad thing is if the country is attacked, either by a military/terrorist force or an assault on our economics system, Biden will not be able to rally the country to fight back... Since Trump is sure to deliver another slice of payback.
When has the MSM ask Biden or Harris ONE... Just ONE tough question? The answer is never... ZERO creditability from the group that claims to be the guardians of democracy. The sad thing is that they know Biden is a potato and will NEVER ask him one serious question.
The next four years will be interesting!! Especially with a PO’ed Trump!!
On a side note, “I” don’t see too many “former presidents” gathering in the immediate to near future!!
James Polk. Having served one term as he pledged to do and being the only president to fulfill all of his campaign promises*, he left Washington and died less than four months later.
(*reduce tariffs, acquire CA, settle the boundary in the Pacific northwest, treasury reform and during his administration we got stamps, before then all mail was COD.)
This is a great question, but maybe better for the History forum. The answers so far give the impression that many people here don't know much about history.
Many modern-day presidents mostly just laze around. (Reagan?)
Clinton by far. Jimmy Carter was a bad President but he redeemed himself afterwards. Bush failed with his war.
The 90s seem like a halcyon period compared to now. And Clinton presided over it. Too bad he couldn't keep his p**er in his pants, though.
You are saying that because you think the 1990s (when Clinton was president) was a good era that that means that Clinton was a great ex-president. Shouldn't it be based on what Clinton did AFTER he was president to make him a great "ex-president?"
Besides, Clinton hurt the US, especially if you listen to Bernie.
John Quincy Adams would probably be the best "ex-president." He served in congress where he was anti-slavery and supported a lot of development of the country (roads, train tracks, bridges, canals, etc).
Besides Jimmy Carter. Not the best President, but the man is a living saint.
Certainly NOT Carter. As to why, see below, boneyard1962 nails the criteria.

GWB, not a great president, but he absolutely did his best not to interfere with Obama.
George Bush Sr. Actually made himself available as a resource to Bill Clinton while staying out of the lime light.
Obama? Not a terrible President, nor was he a great President. Average at best. He can't let go and do his own thing. Terrible Ex- President.
"Great" ex-Presidents makes themselves invisible after office, except for select events. They never interfere or comment on the current president or policies.
