It’s not. Those who pretend certain people can’t get an ID are racist.
Exactly like these woke whites who spew every racist and demeaning stereotype about blacks? And yet it's these woke bigots, who think they are better than you or me, still don't think they are racist.
Both are fundamental rights. Why are they treated differently?
Could be you have a good point -- but that's not the question asked.
Worthy discussion. If we say owning a gun is a right why should we have to apply for a license right?
I'll look for your thread on that issue.
In the meantime --- specifically address why some say that voter ID laws can be voter suppression, it has been proven in the past that low income minorities are the ones who struggle to meet the criteria for many of the voter ID requirements & the communities that impose those restrictions have no been forthcoming with assistance to help those individuals get the required ID.
It's not a problem until they won't accept anything but white ID. I have a friend who is an enrolled tribal member in North Dakota. He has a BIA (federal) issued photo ID. He doesn't have a drivers license because he is too poor to drive. He was not allowed to vote because they would not recognize his ID.
That's voter suppression. If you are going to require photo ID, it's on you to provide the ID. Making people pay to get photo ID is just another poll tax.
So this person has never voted before? How could something like this fall thru the cracks? How could this situation never have arisen before? It doesn't sound plausible.
Just vote by mail in a Democrat controlled state, they don't need to provide any voter verification, even signatures are not necessary.
It isn't requiring voter ID, it's the restrictions put on how folks get that voter ID.
And before you all go silly/.....meaning -- many of the older rural communities, folks have problem with ID. They don't have a passport, may have a driver's license, mayabe a birth certificate. But they don't have enough to tick all the boxes for the 'voter id'.
Historically, those restrictions have impacted communities that are poor minorities who are clearly Americans so don't make this about the illegal situation.
AND historically the Republican run communities that implement these restrictions, do not provide any assistance or guidance to assist folks with issues acquiring that ID.
I'm all for a consistent voter ID policy and think that there should be processes in place to assist each and every voter on the voter list to get this ID and validate their identity.
But that's not been the goal most of the time.
at a certain point people need to figure out their life otherwise they don't need to be voting. If you cant figure out how to get an ID you have no business reading propositions, candidates statements etc..
Lots of really good articles on line as to why in some communities the voter ID restrictions were perceived as voter suppression. It's well documented.
I am all for a voter ID and for govt. to assist everyone in procuring said ID, not making it harder for them.
I’m not sure why you brought up race as I didn’t mention it. It’s up to your state/local area to provide resource be it for whites or another group
No reason other than ts generally whites who live in rural areas and people assume they are poor and race has been brought up prior in this thread as though its only poor black intercity folks that cant get an ID. They could be any color, white, black, blue, orange. The point is in rural areas there is no bus service, no Lyft or Uber. So if these same poor people are able to get to the polls it would stand to reason they could also get to the DMV.
Because there are areas that don’t have adequate access to get an ID for those with limited funds and transportation options.
How do they get to the polls and other places?
