Certain types of neurotic paranoid Americans have been hysterically screaming "communism!" or other similar 'red scare' terms since 1917. Count them - that's 103 years.

Nearly all other Western World countries have Actual Communist parties.
They get 3-6% of the Vote.
And ALL other Western countries have politics to the LEFT of the Democratic Party.
And Republicans dont claim ANY of those countries to be Communists...
They will admit to Capitalistic with a strong social safety net.
But Republicans scream Democrats are Communists? Really...
It certainly gets some fringe Republicans riled up every time they scream it.

Frank Marshal Davis, a known communist, is the man that Obama said was like a "father figure" to him. Davis also has strong ties to VJ's family.

I agree. At least in the 50s it was more understandable, since there was an actual communist threat. The Cold War is over; we won. Righties today are concerned that if socialists get their way, Americans might get Universal Health Care. The horrors! Worse than being in a gulag! Or one could even imagine government paying for two years of community college tuition. Oh no! Western democracy is doomed!
While I understand your point...I will also say, people who don't understand that small incremental changes result in huge changes far into the future....also don't understand what a huge affect compound interest can have on your financial future either.
Everything builds on something, and what sounds like a small natural incremental change/advance now...would quite possibly have sounded objectionable 5 or 6 steps ago. We certainly should change, evolve, advance...but we just need to look far into the future to see what steps we're laying now...and where we'll likely end up taking the path we're taking...whatever it is. We just don't ever want to get to some point, look back and have to say.....how the hell did we get to this terrible place with such good intentions??

Tennessee, a very Republican-controlled state, gives all residents 2 free years of community college or trade-school.
